Posted @withregram • @almariumsours On National Indigenous Peoples Day it is important to acknowledge the history of apples

Jun 21, 2021

“It is no accident that many of the white settlements sprang up where there was an indigenous orchard. But first, of course, The original owners had to be vanquished. The apple thus became, in its infancy in North America, a tool for colonialism.” Apples were weaponized to destroy food sources of Indigenous Peoples. Their apple varieties were either lost altogether or renamed with English names. Many thanks to Helen Humphreys for having documented this history in her book, The Ghost Orchard. All of us continue to live with the consequences of these crimes against peoples and food.
